Rep. Harris: Doge Is About a Purpose, Not Merely a Statement

Spending in Washington has reached alarming levels, and if Congress fails to address the growing bureaucracy, future generations will face a serious financial burden. For several months, Congress members have expressed frustration over wasteful USAID projects, questionable reporting from NPR, and other long-standing fiscal issues in D.C. The discussion has sparked extensive social media activity, including support for change alongside figures like Elon Musk.

Yet, mere words won’t suffice. Now is the moment to deliver on promises made.

WASHINGTON, DC – DECEMBER 05: Tesla CEO Elon Musk arrives on Capitol Hill on December 05, 2024. Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are discussing plans for a government efficiency initiative aimed at reducing federal spending.

The House of Representatives is gearing up to vote on a package that would put an end to the USAID funding stream and pull support from outlets deemed politically biased, like NPR and PBS. This could be a pivotal point for Republicans to prove that they are serious about fiscal prudence and limited government; these principles are more than just rhetoric but rather the core of the conservative movement. Passing this package is not merely a policy win—it’s a moral imperative.

The efforts of Elon Musk and his team have uncovered significant potential for savings—around $175 billion for taxpayers. But if Congress doesn’t act swiftly, these savings may vanish. Republicans need to unify and take decisive action—there can be no delays or excuses. We must avoid reverting to old habits that plagued the swamp.

The mission behind the government efficiency initiative is straightforward: enhance government effectiveness and accountability by cutting out waste and excess. Taxpayers should not have to fund projects that favor foreign interests when domestic needs are at stake; that’s not aligned with the “America First” ideology at all.

Moreover, this rationale extends to taxpayer-supported media as well. NPR and PBS were intended to provide unbiased information to the public, but they seem to have strayed into partisan territory. A senior editor from NPR has even revealed the organization’s editorial staff has no Republican representation and a substantial number of Democrats. This bias reportedly led them to craft stories aimed at undermining President Trump during key election periods. NPR’s CEO has commented that pursuing the truth may not align with their current objectives, which is frankly unacceptable.

Further illustrating this issue is a recent piece claiming that transgender athletes have no advantages over biological women in sports—this is a prime example of ideology dressed as fact, and it’s not right for taxpayers to support such narratives. The First Amendment does not obligate citizens to fund left-leaning propaganda; it’s time to put an end to this financial drain.

Voting in favor of this package makes straightforward sense, and Congress must act to save taxpayers billions. Any failure to secure these savings rests with Congress. Both President Trump and the efficiency initiative team have set the stage, and the public is expecting tangible results. There’s an important saying: talk can be cheap, but in this instance, failing to act could cost us dearly.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Following this voting, there’s a pressing need to collaborate with the White House to introduce further spending cut packages, continuing until we get our deficit under control. We should utilize all available strategies to address this crisis right now. After all, the future of our children and grandchildren is on the line.
