Clara Adams and her father, David, expressed their thoughts after Clara was disqualified from the California Championship due to a “sportsmanlike” celebration.
David Adams contends that the decision was influenced by race.
In the CIF State Championship, 16-year-old Clara competed in the 400-meter dash, where she won while emulating famed sprinter Maurice Green by using fire extinguishers on her running spikes.
After the celebration, CIF officials quickly intervened and ultimately revoked her state title, disqualifying her from additional events.
The incident garnered national media attention, with David Adams claiming that racial dynamics play a role in the incident, citing historical patterns in the country.
“Look at the governing body, and consider the officials present,” David Adams stated. “We know the context of our history. When white athletes celebrate, it’s seen as passion—something positive for the sport. But when a black or brown athlete celebrates, it’s viewed differently, often negatively.
Clara described her shock at being disqualified, stating, “It was really upsetting to have such an important moment taken away from me.” She reflected on the effort she and her dad put into reaching that moment.
CIF has not made a public statement regarding the controversy surrounding Clara.
She does have support from local athlete Green, who has shared his thoughts with KSBW.
