NYC Democrats discuss Tom Thibodeau's dismissal from the Knicks during a debate, with one supporting the decision.

The recent firing of Tom Thibodeau stirred up a lot of debate, even making its way into the NYC Democratic mayoral candidates’ discussion on Wednesday.

Believe it or not.

During the debate, hosted by NBC 4, candidates were asked about their thoughts on Thibodeau’s dismissal after five seasons coaching the Knicks. Only Michael Blake showed support for the decision. Most others disagreed, including prominent figures like former Governor Andrew Cuomo and state legislator Zoran Mamdani.

They all seemed to feel that, in a results-oriented league, laying off a coach made sense. “Our aim isn’t just to reach the conference finals; we want to win the championship,” Blake articulated.

It wasn’t quite clear how former city secretary Scott Stringer responded to the question.

In a separate issue, Thibodeau’s firing surprised many, particularly basketball insiders. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, for instance, initially thought it was a hoax when he heard the news. “It felt unreal,” Carlisle shared, adding, “It seemed like some kind of fake news. The players respect him too much for it to happen like this.”

During his five years, Thibodeau posted a 226-174 record in the regular season and led the team to the playoffs multiple times, although the last two seasons ended against the Pacers.

ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania mentioned that many in the league were taken aback by the firing, considering Thibodeau’s generally positive history. “I’ve been flooded with calls from executives about this,” Charania noted on SportsCenter.

The Knicks are now in search of a new head coach, and reports suggest that they are likely to prioritize candidates with substantial experience.
