A-HA’s Morten Harket Discusses Parkinson’s Diagnosis
Morten Harket, the lead singer of A-HA, has shared he is dealing with a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, which may affect his ability to sing in the future.
The iconic voice behind “Take On Me” spoke candidly on the band’s website, mentioning how the treatment for his symptoms has already influenced both his voice and what he envisions for his creative path ahead.
The 65-year-old artist revealed that over the past year, he has been undergoing deep brain stimulation treatment, which involved implanting electrodes in both sides of his brain.
While the electrical impulses have helped lessen some physical symptoms, they’ve unfortunately taken a toll on his vocal strength and singing capability.
“I don’t feel like singing, and for me, that’s a pretty clear sign,” Harket told the band’s biographer, Jan Omdaal.
He reflected on his thoughts about what he used to think would work for him, saying he doubts he’ll regain complete technical control.
“The question is whether I can express myself in my own voice. As things are now, that feels impossible,” he admitted, though he remains uncertain about the future.
Harket chose to keep the diagnosis private initially, focusing on managing his symptoms through medication and advanced treatments.
He stated, “I have no problem accepting the diagnosis,” and noted that he often seeks guidance from his 94-year-old father as he navigates his condition.
“A part of me wanted to share this. It’s not the diagnosis that’s the problem; it’s the need for concentration and stability that has held me back,” he said.
He emphasized the challenge of balancing medication with its side effects while trying to maintain his overall well-being.
“It’s tough when your body reacts to various pressures, social situations, and the everyday routine,” he remarked.
Harket and his bandmates, Magne Furuholmen and Paul Waaktaar-Savoy, last toured Australia in 2020, wrapping up their final concert at the Hollywood Bowl in July 2022.
While Harket has been working on new music, he’s uncertain if he will be able to finish those projects in time for release.
Yet, he reassured fans, saying, “Don’t worry about me. Discover who you wish to become. It’s still possible to engage with new experiences every day while caring for the essentials of life and our environment.”
He concluded by encouraging his followers to concentrate their energy on tackling real issues, stating, “Just know that I’m being looked after.”
