Yankees’ Night Highlighted by Fernando Cruz’s Return

In a night that the Yankees would probably rather forget, one bright spot was the return of a healthy Fernando Cruz to the mound.

In their 4-0 defeat against the Guardians on Wednesday, Cruz made his comeback after being placed on the injured list. It was his first game since May 17, and he managed to pitch three innings, giving up just two hits, including a home run to Kyle Manzardo.

“I thought Cruz did really well,” said manager Aaron Boone. “His fastballs looked sharp, and I even noted he got three swings on his forkball.” It’s worth mentioning that the forkball, or splitter, was particularly effective, as it prompted nine swings from the Cleveland lineup. However, the only blemish was that home run by Manzardo, who took a four-seamer out to center-right field.

Cruz noted that he felt Manzardo was anticipating his fastball, which, well, seemed to be the case.

What was most reassuring was not just his performance, but his overall health.

“Honestly, I was a bit surprised,” Cruz admitted. “My velocity was there, and the splitter felt incredible. It’s time to give the team what they need. I’m ready. I feel good.”

Updates on Giancarlo Stanton

As for the Yankees, they are nearing a decision about Giancarlo Stanton’s return. After over a week of participating in live batting practice in Tampa, Stanton is expected back in New York soon, though Boone seemed unsure about the exact timeline.

Stanton, who previously opted out of minor league rehab assignments, told reporters that he felt he might need one this time around, even if he doesn’t plan on returning to play in the field just yet.

The Yankees’ manager is still uncertain about what Stanton’s rehab will entail. “I’m just not sure how that will look, to be honest,” Boone said.

Stanton has been out due to elbow tendonitis, an injury he labeled as severe, which kept him sidelined for two months last spring.

He has mentioned, though, that he intends to push through any pain when he makes his return.

All-Star Game Voting Announcement

Meanwhile, the All-Star Game voting results were revealed on Wednesday. Notable names include Paul Goldschmidt at catcher, Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base, and DJ LeMahieu at third. Anthony Volpe, Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham are also nominated for outfield, with Ben Rice listed as the designated hitter.

Roster Updates

Furthermore, Carlos Carrasco cleared waivers after being reassigned and is now with Scranton/Wilkes Barre.

Dominic Smith, who chose to opt-out of a minor league deal with the Yankees, signed a major league contract with the Giants, boasting a .782 OPS along with eight home runs in 45 games while at Scranton.
