Yankees Fall to Guardians in 4-0 Defeat

On Wednesday night, a third All-Star baseman strolled into Yankee Stadium, but this time, he wasn’t in pinstripes. It was Jose Ramirez from the Guardians, showcasing what top-tier players can do on the diamond.

Ramirez played a crucial role in two double plays and also hit a double during Cleveland’s significant first inning, helping them secure a 4-0 victory over the Yankees.

At the end of the second inning, Anthony Volpe hit into a groundout that Ramirez deftly turned into a double play, finishing the inning with three outs courtesy of starting pitcher Louis Ortiz.

Later, in the sixth inning, Ben Rice was initially called safe on a grounder, but the Guardians successfully challenged that call, securing another double play.

In a celebratory moment, Ramirez sprinted to Ortiz on the mound and gave him a cheerful slap on the chest before leaving the field. The inning concluded with Cody Bellinger’s groundout.

“It’s a big sense of pride,” Ortiz mentioned after the game, using an interpreter to convey the support he felt from Ramirez. “It was a big moment knowing he was there to cheer me on.”

Stephen Voight, the manager for Cleveland, affirmed, “Jose is the best teammate on the planet, and one of the best players, too. The double play he executed tonight was very special. It took intelligence to pull that off, and he genuinely cares about his teammates.”

Ramirez, despite being a standout at Yankee Stadium—hitting .398 with a 1.189 OPS prior to this game—didn’t have the best night, finishing 1-1 with two strikeouts. He has, however, racked up nine home runs at the stadium over his lengthy career.

In the series opener on Tuesday, the Yankees pulled off a narrow 3-2 victory, with Ramirez going 4-2, demonstrating his talent even on a challenging night for the Guardians.
