Speaker Johnson and the Blue Dogs are here to offer you some support

In recent weeks, there’s been a lot of talk about “one big beautiful bill.” While the Republican proposal is certainly substantial, adding over $4 trillion to our national debt is, well, not exactly beautiful.

The harsh truth about this bill is undeniable. We’re looking at $2.8 trillion in new borrowing beyond the next decade, and we’ve already piled on an astounding $36 trillion in national debt. It’s concerning, especially considering that a significant portion—over $700 billion—is allocated for federal health care, mainly Medicaid.

By the year 2034, our debt-to-GDP ratio is projected to hit 125%. This could mean interest payments soaring past $2 trillion yearly, making it nearly impossible to manage our debt. The irony is that we already spend more on debt servicing than on defending our nation or funding healthcare. We seem to be heading down a dangerously unsustainable path.

For decades, out-of-control fiscal policies have plagued the U.S., and this isn’t just one party’s fault. Lawmakers seem stuck on Capitol Hill, swapping irresponsible tax cuts and excessive spending, while everyday Americans continue to feel the pinch.

Recently, Moody’s downgraded the U.S. long-term credit rating from AAA to AA1, signaling concerns. Additionally, the global economy appears to be moving away from reliance on the U.S. dollar, leading to decreased economic activity and lower living standards for many Americans.

As we know, excessive borrowing tends to breed inflation, which drives interest rates up, making it increasingly difficult for people to buy homes, start businesses, or even afford groceries.

This situation is unsustainable and demands urgent change. Recent comments from the Wall Street Journal, echoing Senator Ron Johnson’s sentiment, point out that Congress needs to change course. As the national debt approaches $37 trillion, the need for action has never been more pressing.

So far, during this Congress, there hasn’t been much sign of a shift in priorities. A proposal that offers tax breaks to the wealthiest while cutting crucial programs—like food aid and health insurance—disproportionately affects hardworking Americans. Is the goal of helping the super-wealthy so paramount that lawmakers are willing to impose further debt on the average citizen?

The notion of national debt may seem abstract when discussed endlessly by politicians and pundits, but most Americans understand its implications. They must balance their budgets each month; why shouldn’t the federal government do the same?

The reality is, it can. But for years, Congress has chosen convenience over responsibility, leaving much of the financial management to chance.

Since the 1990s, the Blue Dogs have relentlessly pursued fiscal responsibility. They’ve supported legislation that aims to curtail reckless spending by holding both parties accountable. In the past, even President Clinton understood the importance of maintaining budget discipline. Americans expect lawmakers to prioritize economic stability as costs continue to rise.

This call for accountability hasn’t resonated with many in Congress, as they opt to continue policies that drive the national debt to alarming levels. This trend leaves hardworking Americans disillusioned and questioning the effectiveness of their government, with the dream of financial prosperity feeling increasingly distant.

The Blue Dogs’ vision emphasizes that government can work effectively. We believe change is not just possible but essential. It doesn’t have to be this way.

There exists a different path. We are committed to collaborating bipartisanly to extend tax relief to working Americans who need it most. Unfortunately, our suggestions have largely fallen on deaf ears within the Republican leadership.

Yet, as costs keep escalating, public trust in the government continues to plummet. Americans yearn for meaningful change; we intend to be the solution by advocating for practical policies that resonate with citizens. Our commitment remains strong. We’re eager to partner with our Republican colleagues to tackle the challenges facing our country and deliver tangible results for the American people.

Please consider this an invitation. Will you join us in seeking out solutions?
