Sean Monaghan, a center for the Blue Jackets, became emotional while accepting the NHL Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, with the presentation made by the wife of his late friend and teammate, Johnny Gaudreau.
A video shared by the NHL on Thursday captured Monaghan’s surprise when he received the award, which is presented to “the player who best demonstrates the qualities of patience, sportsmanship, and commitment to hockey.” Meredith Gaudreau, who tragically lost her husband the night before his sister’s wedding, expressed her feelings in the video.
“I was truly honored and excited to be part of this surprise,” Meredith stated. “Sean supported me through everything, including all the ups and downs. I’ve often pulled him into emotional moments on live TV, and now it’s time to celebrate him.”
Monaghan and Gaudreau played together for nine seasons with the Calgary Flames. They reconnected last July when Monaghan signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract in Columbus.
Sadly, Gaudreau and his brother Matthew lost their lives in an accident involving suspected drunk drivers while cycling in New Jersey, just weeks before training camp, which crushed their shared dream of playing together again.
Amid his sadness, Monaghan demonstrated strength, often sharing heartfelt messages on stage during public appearances. Throughout the season, he scored 19 goals and provided 38 assists in 54 games, leading to his nomination for the Masterton Trophy.
In a touching moment, Meredith mentioned, “Sean, you meant everything to John… this is really about you. Your patience and character during such tough times is an example to all. I know John would be incredibly proud.”
Monaghan, while accepting the award, reflected on its significance. “Winning the Bill Masterton Trophy is a tremendous honor. The names associated with it carry great meaning. It brings a lot of pride to my life, my family, and my team. I’ll definitely take time to reflect on this,” he shared.
Many observers felt that Monaghan was a deserving recipient of the award, especially considering the challenges he faced after losing his friends and teammates.
The NHL’s decision to incorporate Gaudreau’s wife into the ceremony was a thoughtful gesture that added depth and poignancy to the occasion.
