Second missing hiker discovered deceased on Maine's Mount Katahdin

Tragic Outcome in Baxter State Park Hike

Baxter State Park authorities have confirmed the death of a second hiker who had been missing since Sunday. The hiker, Esther Kaiderling, 28, along with her father, Tim Kaiderling, 58, from Ulster Park, New York, embarked on a hike to the summit of Mile High Mount Katahdin early Sunday morning. Their last known communication was around 10:15 AM that day.

Concerns for their well-being arose when family members did not hear from them Sunday night, prompting a search effort.

In an update posted on Facebook Wednesday, park officials shared the heartbreaking news of Esther’s body being found in a wooded area of Tablelands around 1 PM on June 4th. The post expressed condolences and gratitude for the support extended to the family during this tough time.

The body of Tim Kaiderling was recovered the following day in the same Tableland area. His brother, Joe, reflected on Tim’s vibrant spirit, saying, “He lived enthusiastically. He loved life, loved people, loved God.” Joe also shared a glimpse of Tim’s personality, describing him as a storyteller with a rich sense of humor.

Expressions of sorrow were voiced by park officials, and a comprehensive search commenced once it became apparent that the duo’s vehicle remained parked at the campsite that Monday morning. The search involved an extensive team, including game wardens, K9 units, rangers, and support from the Maine National Guard.

Weather conditions on Sunday were reportedly unkind, with rain, fog, and snow complicating the already dangerous hiking situation. This tragedy serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of outdoor adventures.
