NY/NJ World Cup Host Committee Ensures Safety for 2026

The New York/New Jersey World Cup Host Committee has made it clear that the unsettling scenes from the recent Copa America final in Miami won’t be repeated at MetLife Stadium next year.

Alex Lasley, who leads the NY/NJ Host Committee, stated they will do everything possible to avoid any similar chaos when the area’s stadiums host the prestigious soccer event in July 2026. “It’s crucial for people to know that they’re safe—kids are going to be there, and everyone should feel secure in that environment,” Lasley mentioned in a recent interview.

The recent Copa America final, featuring Argentina and Colombia, turned chaotic as many fans without tickets surged through the gates at Hard Rock Stadium. This situation overwhelmed security and local law enforcement, leading to over an hour delay, 27 arrests, and 55 ejections from the venue.

Lasley referred to this situation as uncharacteristic, noting it was “a once-in-a-million” scenario for a sporting event in the U.S. He emphasized that lessons are to be learned from this incident. “While we recognize the need to take any necessary precautions, we have full confidence in our security and ticketing strategies to prevent any similar issues at MetLife,” he added.

Scheduled to host eight matches as part of the 2026 World Cup, MetLife Stadium will also be the site of the championship game on July 19, 2026. The World Cup will be co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, marking an exciting chapter for soccer in North America.

Before the World Cup, the U.S. is set to host Copa America in 2024, as well as the Club World Cup this summer. Local officials predict the tournament could generate upwards of $2 billion for the region, drawing in millions of visitors throughout its duration.
