Billy Joel’s Ex-Wife Comments on His Health Diagnosis
Elizabeth Weber, Billy Joel’s first ex-wife, has spoken out following the musician’s recent diagnosis of brain damage. The iconic artist, known for songs like “Uptown Girl,” revealed last month that he has been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus.
In light of this diagnosis, Weber reflected on their marriage, which lasted from 1973 to 1982. She shared that she always believed Joel would rise to fame. “He’s been working hard all his life,” she noted at the premiere of “Billie Joel: And That Goes” in New York. “No one worked harder than he did during our years together.”
While the five-time Grammy Award winner, now 76, was absent from the event, his current wife, Alexis Roderick Joel, 43, represented him. Weber expressed her hopes for his recovery, stating, “I just want him to be restored to health so that he can enjoy life with his family. His health is what matters most to me.”
Despite their marriage ending after just seven years, Weber maintains great admiration for Joel’s music. “There are so many incredible songs. People can see him perform and think, ‘That could be me,'” she explained, adding that while not everyone can sing and play piano like him, anyone can try.
In light of his diagnosis, Joel has canceled all performances until next year. The disorder affects a small percentage of individuals aged 70 to 80 and involves an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, which can impact cognitive functions.
In a recent announcement, Joel mentioned that the condition had worsened after recent concerts, leading to issues with his hearing, vision, and balance. He is now undergoing physical therapy and resting per his doctor’s advice. “We apologize for disappointing our audience, and we appreciate your understanding,” his team stated.
Alexis also expressed gratitude for the support from fans, stating they were thankful for the care received and the rapid diagnosis. “Bill is loved by so many, and for us, he is the heart of our family. We anticipate his recovery,” she shared.
This week, Howard Stern provided a positive update on Joel’s condition during his show, reminiscing about a dinner they had together two weeks ago. He mentioned that while Joel does have health challenges, he reassured fans: “He said, ‘I won’t die.’ He wants everyone to know that.”
