Carlisle Reacts to Burke Speculation

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle expressed his disappointment regarding the recent rumors about Doris Burke’s future at ESPN, especially coming just before the 2025 NBA Finals.

During a pre-game session on Thursday before the Pacers took on the Thunder, Carlisle took a moment to acknowledge Burke’s contributions to sports broadcasting. As a vital part of ESPN’s leading NBA team alongside Mike Breen and Richard Jefferson, she has become an inspiration for many in the field.

“Media professionals are definitely under a lot of scrutiny,” Carlisle noted. “Broadcasting is a fast-paced environment, and you’re often subject to comments from anonymous sources. I came across the speculations about Doris yesterday, and I felt it was important to say a few words about it.”

He went on to praise Burke for paving the way for female broadcasters, sharing a personal anecdote about how she has influenced the career aspirations of his own daughter, who’s 21. “Doris exemplifies courage and passion in her work. It’s disheartening to see unnecessary reports emerge before such significant events,” Carlisle added.

“She’s a friend of mine. I’ve even suggested she consider coaching, given her extensive knowledge,” he mentioned.

Carlisle also highlighted several other women in the NBA media landscape who have followed in Burke’s footsteps due to her influence throughout her career.

His comments came after a report from The Athletic indicated that Burke’s position in ESPN’s NBA Finals coverage might not be secure for the upcoming season.

The report mentioned that Burke’s role for the finals would not definitely continue, as ESPN is reportedly reviewing its broadcasting plans.

ESPN executives are said to be contemplating whether Burke’s pairing with a two-person team would work as opposed to keeping the three-person format. Meanwhile, it seems that ESPN is looking to re-sign Jefferson, whose contract has recently expired. There’s also interest from Amazon Prime Video in the former NBA champion.

Breen, in contrast, is secured with a long-term contract.

Burke made history by becoming the first woman to serve as a TV analyst for a major men’s American sports championship when she joined the NBA Finals broadcasting team in 2023. She was also inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1991.

In related news, the Pacers celebrated an impressive win against the Thunder, with star player Tyrese Haliburton sinking a last-second jumper to secure a 111-110 victory. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday.
