Senate Democrats Call for Action on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

Senate Democrats, led by Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts, who is a prominent member of the Banking Committee, are urging the Trump administration to halt any plans for restructuring Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Warren expressed concerns about potential changes that might prioritize investor profits over the well-being of millions of American homeowners. She emphasized the risk of repeating a situation similar to the foreclosure crisis that occurred in 2008 if the President’s plan is not carefully considered.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Democratic leader, and other Democrats on the Banking Committee also contributed their signatures to this call for action.

The letter requests that Pulte and his team pause any plans to reclassify these entities until a thorough assessment of the implications for the housing market is completed.

They highlighted the lack of analysis from both the Federal Housing Administration and the administration regarding how the government’s actions with Fannie and Freddie might affect mortgage fees and, subsequently, the housing market.

This pushback from the Democrats coincided with President Trump’s earlier social media remarks about his intentions to “open up these amazing companies,” referring to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Democrats are seeking clarity from Pulte regarding shifts in approach since he appears to influence Trump’s social media activity, especially in light of recent comments from the FHFA director indicating that privatizing Fannie and Freddie is not currently a priority.

Warren and her colleagues also hope to obtain a list of discussions relating to privatization since the Senate confirmation in March, including details about which institutions and officials have been involved.

In a part of their correspondence, they expressed concern that Pulte seems to prioritize advancing the President’s political agenda over his regulatory responsibilities. They indicated this was troubling given his position as a guardian of these corporate entities.

They have requested that Pulte respond to their inquiries by June 18th.

Other Democrats who signed the letter include Catherine Cortez Masto (Nevada), Tina Smith (Minnesota), Reuben Gallego (Arizona), Ron Wyden (Oregon), Andy Kim (New Jersey), Mazie Hirono (Hawaii), Chris Van Hollen (Maryland), Gary Peters (Michigan), and Lisa Blunt Rochester (Delaware).

Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont also added his signature to the letter.
