Tyrese Haliburton’s Recent Performance Stuns the NBA
In late April, a poll highlighted Tyrese Haliburton as the “most overrated player” among NBA players. But things have taken a sharp turn since then, especially after his impressive performance in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, where he secured a victory with a game-winning jumper.
This change in perception has not escaped the attention of ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt. He praised Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers for their phenomenal playoff journey, stating that they’ve notched up three wins in their quest for the championship.
In a postgame interaction, Van Pelt openly admitted, “I was late to the party,” conceding that he hadn’t fully appreciated the Pacers’ potential. Haliburton, who was clearly pleased, acknowledged Van Pelt’s candidness with a handshake, saying, “You’re the real thing for that. Many of your counterparts won’t accept that.”
While Haliburton has silenced skeptics with his performances, he reflected on the Pacers’ struggles from earlier in the season. Back in December, the team was below .500, and Haliburton didn’t hold back when he admitted they weren’t playing well at that time.
Van Pelt reiterated that he was late in recognizing the growth of the Pacers, to which Haliburton responded, “We were late to the party too.” The Pacers had a shaky start to the season, juggling a 5-5 record before finding their rhythm later on, eventually reaching 15-15 after a five-game winning streak.
By the beginning of the new year, the team’s record sat at 16-18, but things began to change for the better. The Pacers turned things around dramatically, going 10-2 in January and finishing the last 20 games with a 15-5 mark, catching fire just in time for the playoffs.
The contrast between the Pacers’ early-season struggles and their current success mirrors the nature of many playoff comebacks. Just in Game 1, they managed to snatch victory from Oklahoma City, scoring only 15 points in the fourth quarter yet still finishing strong for a 1-0 lead.
This marks Haliburton’s fourth game-winning shot in the postseason, further establishing his clutch reputation.
The victory came as a shock, even to Van Pelt. He remarked, “All the notes I had on this card were for Oklahoma City to win this game,” highlighting just how monumental the Pacers’ achievement has been. Now, he finds himself celebrating alongside Haliburton, reflecting on the unexpected twists of this playoff journey.
