Lawmakers are not distancing themselves from President Donald Trump amidst the tensions between him and Elon Musk over a contentious bill. One official remarked that Musk “hasn’t changed a single vote,” while another suggested Musk “has lost his way.”
This week, Musk sought out Trump’s fervent supporters, even campaigning for both him and his administration, showing a level of enthusiasm that some found surprising.
Through a series of posts on X, Musk criticized the president, even acknowledging that he may deserve to be removed from office.
In a different post, he lauded Trump’s anticipated success in the 2024 presidential race, hinting that the Epstein Files haven’t been fully released due to Trump’s personal ties.
This speculation followed the waning relevance of mask mandates, as certain government officials approached the end of their era.
Many Republicans suspect Musk’s ire stems from the abolishment of electric vehicle regulations and green energy incentives that have historically benefited his company, Tesla. However, lawmakers are questioning if Musk’s influence will genuinely impact their peers.
“He’s not affecting the vote,” stated House Majority Leader Steve Scullies (R-LA).
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who seems to be keeping cordial relations with Musk, was quite hesitant to credit Musk with any electoral success.
“Not everyone deserves credit, but if there’s one person who does, it’s Donald J. Trump,” he remarked.
NBC News has reported that Johnson also commented on Musk’s opinions, saying, “I’m not quarreling with him about rocket science. I just hope he doesn’t debate me on legislation.”
Other members are unclear about Musk’s outburst.
“For some reason, Elon seems very unhappy,” noted Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL). Another representative, Troy Naires (R-TX), also remarked that “Musk seems to have lost his passion.”
Rep. Kevin Hern (R-OK) believes that people are interpreting Musk’s social media outpourings as a reflection of Trump.
“Every tweet resonates with folks who are aligned with President Trump. His support appears to be dwindling,” Hern explained.
Chip Roy (R-TX) expressed similar views, telling Fox News, “Elon crossed a line today.”

“If Joe Biden had Donald Trump on the Epstein logs, it should have come out during the campaign,” Rep. Randy Fein (R-FL) said regarding accusations Musk made against Trump in his statements. “I don’t really understand the motivation behind it all; it seems unfortunate,” he added.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) commented on the accusations brought up by Musk, stating, “The Biden administration would have leaked it. Trump provides the perfect fodder for Democrats, so I’m skeptical about it.” He also questioned why Musk would be seen with the president if the allegations were true, calling the situation confusing.
“We can’t speak to Musk’s motivations, but we can focus on avoiding a $4 trillion tax increase for Americans,” articulated Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE) regarding the ongoing conflict.
While some hope for a resolution, Trump is taking a measured approach in his response.
“Elon is wearing thin. I asked him to step back and ended his EV delegation. He pushed for electric cars no one wanted, and I was already attempting to do something about that!” said Trump in a social media post.
“The easiest way to cut down on billions in spending is to end Elon’s government subsidies and contracts. I’ve oddly been surprised that Biden hasn’t acted on this!” he added in another post.
Reports suggest Musk requested a phone conversation with Trump on Friday, but White House officials indicated that Trump is “not interested” in engaging with him.
“This is an unfortunate situation, and I’m not looking to escalate it,” noted a staff member.
