Five beneficiaries from the Trump-Musk split

Five beneficiaries from the Trump-Musk split

A recent fallout between President Trump and Elon Musk has significantly altered the political landscape in Washington, D.C.

This rift allows various political and business competitors to capitalize on Musk’s distancing from the White House and MAGA circles. While some of Musk’s adversaries might relish in this conflict, it could also offer Trump’s main opponents some leverage.

Different individuals and factions stand to gain from the fallout surrounding Musk.

Jeff Bezos and Blue Origin

Musk’s estrangement from Trump opens a door for Jeff Bezos to strengthen his relationship with the president while promoting his aerospace venture, Blue Origin.

Even prior to Musk’s engagement with Trump, he and Bezos had been at odds for years.

Meanwhile, Bezos faced down Trump’s critiques linked to the Washington Post, even engaging in legal battles with the administration.

Before any partnership, SpaceX was already established as a leader in the industry, greatly surpassing Blue Origin in launch frequency.

However, Musk’s deepened association with Trump allowed SpaceX to secure government contracts that could potentially sideline Blue Origin.

Now that Musk’s relationship with Trump is strained, Bezos has an opportunity to rebuild his partnership efforts with the administration.

With the upcoming 2024 elections, Bezos has been cautious about pending approvals. He suggested his decisions stem from editorial standards, but recognized how entangled his business might be in complex political dynamics.

Additionally, Amazon reportedly secured a documentary deal involving Melania Trump, marking a significant investment during a turbulent political season.

Boeing

Musk’s parting from Trump also represents a win for Boeing, especially given the company’s recent recovery following a series of scandals.

Boeing faced its own challenges during the Biden presidency, particularly amid an investigation concerning commercial aircraft safety protocols.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Snie Williams had an extended stay on the ISS after launching with Boeing’s Starliner. What was initially a short mission turned into a nine-month delay.

Former President Biden declined a Musk offer to bring them back with SpaceX’s Dragon, choosing instead to maintain distance amid the ongoing feud. An electric vehicle summit did see Musk and Tesla engaged, but overall, this feud boosted Boeing’s standing.

Eventually, Wilmore and Williams returned to Earth, thanks to Trump sending a Dragon to retrieve them.

Musk’s threat to cancel a contract with Trump may have backfired, but it provided Boeing with a chance to recover from past incidents.

Conflict with Sam Altman

Before this week, tensions with Musk’s allies could have primarily revolved around his disagreements with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Musk, a co-founder of the non-profit AI company behind ChatGPT, has clashed with Altman regarding OpenAI’s direction and even initiated legal action over alleged breaches of commitment.

He has also established Xai, a competitor to OpenAI, which incorporates a chatbot feature into social media.

Despite Musk’s criticism, Trump has overlooked his opposition to Altman, choosing instead to feature OpenAI in his Project Stargate, aimed at enhancing AI infrastructure.

Musk found himself in a situation where he had to navigate Trump’s alliance with Altman, all while Trump disregarded Musk’s objections.

Immigration Stance

Musk has expressed support for stricter immigration policies, yet he has brushed shoulders with Trump’s inner circle, which has been at odds with him on key immigration issues.

Even before Trump took office, a debate erupted between Musk and some of Trump’s supporters regarding the H-1B visa program, triggering disputes over its implications.

Musk defended the H-1B program, emphasizing its importance to U.S. competitiveness, but faced pushback from Trump allies, viewing his stance as counterproductive to Trump’s American-first agenda.

Contention with notable figures like Stephen Miller, an architect of Trump’s immigration policy, further complicated the relationship.

Miller has voiced strong support for tax cuts and tight border controls, making statements that seem to directly critique Musk.

Implications for Democrats

While Democrats began 2025 on a rough note, Musk’s feud with Trump may provide some unexpected advantages.

This online skirmish has offered Democrats a break from their struggles to challenge Trump’s agenda and solidify their message as they strategize for the upcoming elections.

“Yeah, it seems like they’re in a bit of a fight, huh?” remarked Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “It’ll be interesting to see how it affects legislative decisions.”

Trump appears eager to divert attention away from pressing legislative issues, and his dispute with Musk could distract the GOP, potentially leading to further fractures within the party.

“We’ve seen some legislative ripple effects, but I think it’s just the beginning as newer dynamics emerge,” said a former White House aide, pointing out internal tensions.

Democrats have been banking on Musk becoming a liability in future elections, but the ongoing conflict could reinforce their position if it leads to significant Republican divisions.

“Musk has hinted that Republicans will struggle without his backing, and as tensions mount with Trump, it’s tricky to see how that plays out in upcoming races,” the aide explained.

The midterm elections may provide a pivotal moment, where Musk’s involvement—whether through support or dissent—could shift the political balance. This election is shaping up to be crucial, especially in swing districts.
