Kilmar Abrego Garcia Returns to the U.S. Facing Criminal Charges
Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran man deported from the United States earlier this year, is back and now facing serious charges related to human smuggling and conspiracy, as confirmed by the Department of Justice.
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced his arrival back in the U.S. after an arrest warrant was issued against him.
“Abrego Garcia has landed in the United States to face justice,” Bondi said. “A grand jury in the Middle District of Tennessee returned a sealed indictment charging him with alien smuggling and conspiracy.”
He was previously incarcerated in El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison, known for housing violent gang members. Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele agreed to his return after U.S. officials alerted the Salvadoran government about the arrest warrant.
According to federal indictments, Abrego Garcia played a significant role in a human smuggling ring for over a decade, trafficking women, children, and other gang members across the U.S.
“The grand jury found that over the past nine years, Abrego Garcia has played a significant role in an alien smuggling ring,” Bondi elaborated. “They found this was his full-time job. He was a smuggler of humans, children, and women, making over 100 trips throughout our country.”
The investigation into his activities was prompted by a traffic stop in 2022 when Tennessee Highway Patrol pulled him over for speeding.
During the stop, officers grew suspicious upon noticing his van was filled with passengers. He claimed they were construction workers carpooling, but, in reality, he was transporting undocumented immigrants. Interestingly, he himself was in the U.S. illegally as well.
“He’s hauling these people for money,” noted a state trooper during the stop, as captured in body cam footage.
Back in March, when he was initially deported, some Democrats argued his deportation was unconstitutional, claiming he didn’t receive “due process,” despite being identified as an MS-13 gang member, which the U.S. has classified as a foreign terrorist organization.
“For months, the Trump administration flouted the Supreme Court and our Constitution,” stated Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen. “Today, they seem to have finally complied with court orders and the due process rights afforded to everyone in the U.S.”
The new indictment against Abrego Garcia aligns with a court ruling mandating his return following the deportation.
“The Justice Department’s Grand Jury indictment against Abrego Garcia proves the Democrat Party was mistaken, and their allies in the media have once again been misled,” the Trump administration commented.
“Abrego Garcia was never an innocent ‘Maryland Man.’ He is an illegal alien terrorist, gang member, and human trafficker. Democrat lawmakers who defended him should apologize to his victims,” they continued.
Once he concludes court proceedings regarding the smuggling charges, it’s anticipated that Abrego Garcia will serve any imposed sentence in the United States. Following that, he is expected to be deported back to El Salvador, according to reports.
