Carlos Narvaez succeeding with the Red Sox in all aspects following Yankees trade

Yankees’ Former Catcher Carlos Narvaez Finds Success with Red Sox

Aaron Boone was aware that Carlos Narvaez had the makings of a Major League player.

However, he didn’t anticipate that Narvaez would step up as a key hitter for the Red Sox and possibly earn an All-Star spot in his rookie season after the Yankees traded him to Boston. The trade occurred in December, involving a young catcher from the Yankees.

“I really love the player and the person he is, so I’m not surprised he’s finding success,” Boone mentioned before the Yankees’ series against the Red Sox in the Bronx. “He has exceptional talent and is a smart guy with a great mindset.”

The Yankees certainly have insight into Narvaez’s abilities, having watched him develop over nine years since signing him out of Venezuela in 2015. He played a total of 497 minor league games from 2016 to 2024.

After waiting for his chance, Narvaez finally made his MLB debut last July when Jose Trevino went on the injured list. Narvaez stepped in as the backup catcher for Austin Wells, playing in six games.

Eventually, the Yankees traded him to the Red Sox to free up space on their 40-man roster, also gaining international bonus pool funds in the deal along with promising pitcher Elmer Rodriguez Cruz.

Narvaez found the trade surprising but believed Boston offered him “a bit more opportunity.”

That belief turned out to be correct, as he secured a role in spring training.

A trade that may have seemed minor turned out to be significant for the Red Sox. They recognized Narvaez as a catcher capable of strengthening their defense. “He’s one of the best defensive catchers in the league,” said Boston’s manager Alex Cora.

“Honestly, I thought he might just be an offensive player,” Cora confessed regarding the 26-year-old. “But we knew he could definitely boost our defense.”

Narvaez arrived at Yankee Stadium with no intentions of seeking revenge.

He praised the organization as “great,” expressing gratitude for giving him his first contract in professional baseball. He also spent time with his close friend Oswald Cabrera, another Venezuelan player.

Additionally, Narvaez shares connections with other Yankees catchers, one of whom reported to spring training in 2024.

The Yankees’ catching pipeline boasts impressive figures, including Narvaez (with the Red Sox), Agustin Ramirez (with the Marlins), Luis Torrens (with the Mets), Trevino (with the Reds), and several others who have found their way to the majors.

“I’m extremely proud to be part of this group,” Narvaez remarked. He recalled how, during a recent matchup between the Red Sox and the Mets, he and Torrens reflected on their journey from the 2024 season. “It’s really cool to see everyone carve out their path to the big leagues.”

The Yankees have Wells as their starting catcher, while Escala serves as backup, and Rice has mostly played designated hitter or first base but continues to prepare as an option behind the plate.

Cora acknowledged, “They’ve done remarkably well in developing defensive catchers over the years.”
