Stephen A. Smith’s New SiriusXM Show Sparks Controversy

Concerns continue to rise regarding Stephen A. Smith’s new radio show on SiriusXM.

Joe Fortenbaugh, who co-hosts “Carlin vs. Joe” on ESPN Radio from 12 PM to 3 PM, expressed his thoughts on Smith’s new venture during an episode of “First Take” on Thursday. His program now competes with Smith’s, which fluctuates between humor and serious discussions.

The exchange escalated when Fortenbaugh called out Smith about taking over a slot previously occupied by another show. That show had its hosts, including her and co-host Cody Decker, let go.

“What’s going on with this new radio show?” Fortenbaugh questioned Smith. “I see you as my competition now for this time slot.”

Scheduled to launch on Mad Dog Sports Radio on September 2nd, Smith addressed the situation later, attempting to remain cordial.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Smith remarked before an NBA Finals game. “I didn’t think about that, but it created a chance for me and my production company. I couldn’t pass it up.”

Molly Qerim, the host of “First Take,” then asked if Smith would prefer Fortenbaugh’s listeners to choose between them. Fortenbaugh chimed in, suggesting one could listen to him all day if they wanted more of what he offers.

“You’re right; I haven’t tuned into SiriusXM radio, I’m sticking with you,” Qerim replied.

Smith, however, didn’t seem particularly affected by her comments.

“I’m not aiming for Molly as my audience,” he stated. “There are plenty of women who have shown me appreciation, and I get support from people like Joe, so I’m just not concerned.”

Qerim then pointed out that Smith’s target demographic seemed less interested in the truth and more focused on sensationalism. Smith retorted, “Call it whatever you want.”

This back-and-forth added to the tension of the week, where Michelle Beadle criticized Smith for how he handled her show’s cancellation. Beadle remarked that she was “blinded” and found it “embarrassing” to learn about it through the media.

Regarding Smith’s attitude, Beadle expressed her disdain, stating, “I don’t respect him or his work. This goes back to comments he made years ago that were unacceptable.”

She added, “I think he’s often wrong, and when someone is as thin-skinned as he is, it’s challenging to be right.”

Smith attempted to clarify the circumstances surrounding Beadle’s exit, asserting that he never intended for anyone to find out in that way. He emphasized his character and team spirit, suggesting that misconceptions were being made.

“I want to make it clear what kind of person I am,” he said, referring to how the news was communicated. He noted being instructed by Sirius to wait for an announcement related to the Howard Stern Show.
