Mixed Reactions at Miley Cyrus’ Premiere
Miley Cyrus made headlines recently at the Tribeca Film Festival with the world premiere of her long-form music video for “something beautiful.” Initially a Disney star, Miley has evolved into a major pop figure, but her latest event didn’t go quite as planned, as evidenced by an uncomfortable interaction caught on video.
Attendees at the Beacon Theater seemed to expect a live performance rather than a preview of her upcoming projects. “I thought this was a concert. I paid $800,” one attendee exclaimed during a Q&A session after the film.
Another fan chimed in, “Are you actually going to sing?” indicating a clear disconnect between expectations and reality.
The festival had promoted the screening as a unique pop opera, complete with 13 new songs from her latest album, featuring collaborations with Grammy winners. However, many ticket-holders were left feeling misled, especially those who had bought tickets from resale platforms.
Fans took to social media to express their frustrations. One user pointed out that searching for events with Miley’s name didn’t show her on any upcoming tour. “This is a link I clicked to buy,” they noted, emphasizing the confusion surrounding the event.
Further complaints surfaced from other concert-goers who were disappointed to discover the event was not the concert they were anticipating. “If we had known, no one would have spent that much,” they mentioned, emphasizing the lack of understanding regarding her touring habits.
As of late May, resale tickets were already being listed for over $500, especially for better seats. Many claimed they felt misled about the nature of the event. Despite the disappointment, Cyrus did eventually respond to the crowd’s requests by performing her hit “Mountain Climbing” a cappella.
This event marked one of the rare chances for fans to see Cyrus live, a fact that seemed to heighten their anticipation. “I can’t… it’s not just that I can’t, it’s more about my desires,” Cyrus previously expressed in an interview, reflecting her feelings about performing for large crowds. “Do I want to live my life for the joy and fulfillment of someone other than myself?”
Cyrus has noted feeling somewhat disconnected from her audience during performances. “There’s no connection. There’s no safety,” she shared, explaining that singing for huge crowds isn’t always fulfilling for her. Her last major tour was for “Bangerz” back in 2014, which included over 70 shows, followed by a much shorter tour in 2015.
Aside from feeling isolated while touring, Cyrus has also been open about her health struggles, specifically an issue known as Reinke’s edema, which she described as “vocal cord abuse.” She compared it to running a marathon with ankle weights, making performances extraordinarily challenging.
