Colombian Presidential Candidate Hospitalized After Shooting
Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, a candidate for the Colombian presidency, has been reported in critical condition after an incident during a campaign speech in Bogotá on Sunday.
Uribe Turbay, 39, who represents the conservative Centro Democrático party, was attacked while addressing supporters on Saturday. Authorities apprehended a 15-year-old suspect allegedly armed with a 9mm Glock pistol. According to a statement from the Colombian Attorney General’s Office, as cited by various news sources, the situation is alarming.
He is currently receiving priority medical care at Fundación SantaFe Clinic, with reports indicating he was shot once in the knee and suffered two gunshot wounds to the head. Maria Claudia Tarazona, his wife, urged for prayers on social media, emphasizing that a medical team was “fighting for his life.”
The Colombian government reacted strongly, condemning the shooting as an assault on both the integrity of its officials and on democracy itself. They characterized the violence as intolerable within the public sphere, calling for collective repudiation from both the state and its citizens.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also issued a statement, strongly denouncing the assassination attempt. He described the shooting as a direct assault on democracy, attributing it to aggressive rhetoric from some factions within the Colombian government. Rubio urged President Gustavo Petro to temper inflammatory language and to ensure the safety of public officials.
As investigations into the shooting continue, there’s a palpable concern about the implications this attack may have on the political landscape in Colombia.
