Exploring the hidden world of actual vampires

Australia’s Secret Society of Real Vampires

So what connects a gang member, a doctor, a politician, and a musician? Well, they’re all part of Australia’s mysterious community known as the “Vampire Court.” Emerging from the Goth subculture, this group now includes people from all walks of life.

But if your image of vampires is just pale folks sipping red drinks, think twice. For many, living as a “real vampire” goes beyond a mere aesthetic; it’s about something deeper, something quite serious.

While they may not actually turn into bats or live eternally, these individuals partake in consuming human blood, sport surgically crafted fangs, and throw elaborate vampire-themed balls. Their community has gained some traction lately, especially as social media wanes and traditional religions diminish.

However, don’t expect these nocturnal beings to provide clarity about their way of life. They often claim it’s not dangerous, yet critics point out that the secrecy might allow for exploitation.

Revenge in the Shadows

The allure of vampires has been ingrained in folklore for ages, with tales of the “Bloody Beast” traced back to ancient cultures, including First Nations stories. Recently, these narratives have transformed into romanticized symbols of self-discovery.

Take Crystal, for example. She recounts an experience that has left a lasting impact on her. It all started when she was 18 and received an invitation to a lavish party in an affluent Sydney suburb. Attracted by the Gothic culture, she was eager to join, believing it to be a lively celebration orchestrated by friends.

However, what she found was entirely different. Surrounded by questionable company, including members allegedly tied to the Yakuza and Triads, she felt out of her depth. She vividly recalls that they were openly not shy about what they were into.

It wasn’t long before she realized these men were involved with the “Vampire Court.” After being offered champagne, she lost consciousness. When Crystal awoke, she discovered bruises and marks on her body that she referred to as “love bites.” Her recollections remain unclear, but she strongly feels she had been harmed.

Crystal didn’t report what happened to authorities. Yet, this experience haunted her, especially when she moved elsewhere for her studies. Along the way, she encountered more members of the vampire scene, which culminated in another unsettling encounter.

During one gathering, the group pressured her to drink human blood, claiming she couldn’t belong without doing so. Feeling trapped, she complied. Afterward, she often woke with strange marks on her body, leaving her unsettled about whether she had been fed upon without her knowledge.

She acknowledges that the court comprises influential individuals—doctors, nurses, business owners—who lead otherwise typical lives out of public view. For too long, she kept quiet, fearing disbelief or worse. Now, however, she feels a need to share her story and advocate for awareness.

“I want revenge for how I was treated,” she states, reflecting on her painful past. Despite her experiences, she hopes to foster a safer environment where people can appreciate vampire culture without fear of exploitation.

The Medical Mystery

Crystal’s unnerving account resonates differently than the traditional horror scenarios we’re used to seeing. Importantly, vampire-related crimes are rare, and the vast majority of community members simply seek connection and often engage in charitable efforts. Not everyone who identifies as a “real vampire” consumes blood, and those who do often take precautions.

So, what’s the rationale behind it? Many “real vampires” claim that consuming blood balances their energies and combats feelings of fatigue. Some might argue that this inclination towards blood consumption hints at underlying mental health issues.

But can we simply dismiss this as a delusion? It’s challenging to say for sure. It seems that many have settled into a lifestyle that remains shadowy and secretive. Approaches to their identities reveal a struggle—many are hesitant to speak openly about their lives.

One notable figure in this community is Jason DeMarco, or Don Jason, who leads a local meetup group. Interestingly, he has political ties, exemplifying the unique mix of personas within this “Vampire Court.”

In a YouTube clip, Jason, decked out in Edwardian attire, shares his story. He often mentions knowing he was different from a young age and confidently declared a desire to become “Dracula.” He exclusively feeds from female donors who are enthusiastic participants, turning the consumption into an almost euphoric experience.

But what informs his peculiar lifestyle? Jason has Porphyria, a rare blood disorder, which adds layers to the vampire narrative. Symptoms associated with it illustrate how some folklore might find roots in reality.

Vampire Balls: More Than Just Costumes

The phenomenon of vampire balls has its origins in medieval practices, evolving into an international circuit that connects events in various countries, including Australia. The Carpe Noctem Vampire Ball, for instance, is less about dressing up and more about community and identity.

Attendees engage in rituals that serve to deepen their bonds with one another and celebrate who they are, striving for a sense of belonging.

New Initiatives in Australia

One Australian named Andreas Bassory claims to inhabit the character of vampire lore. Living atop a sprawling estate in Transylvania, he draws a connection between Australian individuals seeking to join his vampire court.

Bassory describes this journey in positive terms, noting how Australian newcomers feel empowered by their connection to ancient traditions.

In summary, Dr. Adam Posamay, who studies the sociological aspects of vampire identity, describes it as a modern blend of religion, culture, and self-discovery. He speculates that as societies shift, these “hyperreal” identities may become more prevalent. Yet, official recognition remains elusive, leaving many questions unanswered about how many truly define themselves within this community, and what experiences they carry.

Until the day vampires receive official acknowledgment, the mystery surrounding them will continue to thrive, quietly weaving narratives and lives through the shadows.
