Mets Sweep Rockies with Strong Performance
DENVER — Pete Alonso wasn’t just content to sit at number two on the Mets’ all-time home run list; he wanted to make his mark.
He already tied David Wright with 242 home runs before stepping up to the plate in the eighth inning at Coors Field.
After two pitches, he found himself in front of Wright, with only Daryl Strawberry ahead of him.
Both Alonso and Jeff McNeill contributed significantly, hitting a total of six home runs in the Mets’ impressive 13-5 victory, completing a series sweep.
Alonso was remarkable during the seven-game road trip, hitting five home runs and racking up 15 RBIs.
The Mets, finishing with a 5-2 record on the trip, improved their record to over .500 for the first time this season, reaching a level of play not seen since September 22 of the previous year.
In contrast, the Rockies now sit below .500, continuing to struggle as they did last season when they had a tough year alongside the White Sox, who bore the brunt of poor performance.
The White Sox infamously lost 121 games, marking a low for Major League Baseball. Meanwhile, the Rockies are not far behind with 132 losses.
Alonso surpassed Strawberry to become the Mets’ all-time home run leader during his 23rd career multi-homer game.
He’s now chasing Strawberry’s record of 252 career home runs.
McNeill got the scoring started for the Mets with his first home run in the second inning, giving them an early 1-0 lead.
His impressive hitting included a 10-pitch at-bat that ended with a powerful shot over the right field fence. The Mets then extended their lead with an RBI single from Francisco Alvarez after a single from Ronnie Mauricio and a walk issued to Tyrone Taylor.
