Chicago Police Officer Killed in Friendly Fire Incident
A Chicago Police Department (CPD) officer was tragically killed in a friendly fire incident late Thursday while pursuing a suspected armed individual, as reported by authorities on Friday.
According to CPD manager Larry Snelling, Officer Crystal Rivera, who was 36 years old, and her team were attempting to conduct a Terry Stop on the suspect, who then fled into a nearby apartment. Officers chased him, and during the confrontation, they encountered others armed with rifles. In the ensuing chaos, Officer Rivera was shot.
Compounding the situation, the vehicle intended to transport Rivera to the hospital malfunctioned, leading to a fire that required her to be moved to another vehicle, Snelling detailed.
Despite efforts at the hospital, Rivera succumbed to her injuries. She had served on the force for four years and is survived by her young daughter and mother, as stated by Snelling.
The suspects fled the scene but were later apprehended by backup officers, who also recovered three firearms from the building.
Snelling spoke highly of Officer Rivera, describing her as a “young, vibrant, hardworking” individual who had previously confiscated two guns that day. He noted the daily dangers faced by officers, reflecting on how Rivera was committed to making the streets safer.
“This kind of incident happens too frequently,” Snelling said, expressing his dismay over the fatal shooting.
Highlighting the risks of police work in Chicago, Snelling remarked that officers may not always return home safe.
Mayor Brandon Jackson shared his condolences, indicating that the city is grappling with grief over a tragic loss. He recognized the bravery of Rivera’s colleagues during the incident.
“We are dedicated to ensuring our police department has the necessary support to seek justice,” Jackson stated.
As for crime context, Chicago has reported 513 shootings so far in 2025. Recent data has shown the city ranks among the least safe in the U.S. as of 2024.
CPD operates 25 districts, with District 6 being one of 11 that reported triple-digit shooting incidents last year, making it particularly notable for high crime rates.
While there has been a decline in record-breaking murders over the past five years, theft incidents have concurrently increased. As of June 1st, the total number of crimes reported reached 36,576, surpassing previous years’ totals.
