Riley Gaines Responds to Simone Biles’ Criticism
Riley Gaines has called out what she sees as contradictions in Simone Biles’ recent comments directed at her, particularly concerning the inclusion of trans athletes in sports. In a recent episode of Outkick’s “Gaines for Girls” podcast, Gaines discussed Biles’ social media remarks and emphasized the need for a new framework that allows trans individuals to feel secure in sports.
Gaines noted that Biles suggested creating a third category for trans athletes, but she feels that there’s inconsistency—pointing out Biles’ acknowledgment of trans women as, in some ways, still being male. “I think she might have missed that point,” Gaines remarked.
She added that similar initiatives have already taken place, referencing how World Aquatics (formerly known as FINA) recently implemented a category for trans athletes, which was met with legal challenges from Leah Thomas, who contested the rules and did not win.
Interestingly, Gaines mentioned that World Aquatics had to cancel the open category race during the 2023 Berlin Swimming World Cup, citing a lack of participation. This raised concerns for her: “The compromise that’s being suggested… it should really involve listening to those who it affects,” she said, implying that not all parties agree with such compromises.
In a broader context, she reflects on the changes that have been occurring, such as the NCAA’s revisions to its gender participation policy, which some link to political shifts over recent years.
