Increase in American Applications for British Citizenship
It seems that many Americans are trading their sneakers for a more British lifestyle, complete with trains and lifts.
A notable surge in applications for British citizenship has been reported, with a record number of Americans showing interest. “It’s clear that a substantial number of Americans are eager to apply for UK citizenship, if only to live and work here,” Sadiq Khan mentioned during the Concordia Europe Summit.
Recent figures from the UK Home Office indicate that approximately 1,931 Americans applied for UK citizenship in the first quarter of 2025, marking the highest tally since record-keeping started in 2004.
In total, more than 5,500 Americans have relocated to the UK, which is about a 20% increase from last year. This trend shows that not only are Americans pursuing Brit citizenship but many are also choosing to settle down permanently.
“London always welcomes newcomers with open arms,” Khan added, reflecting on the city’s warm inclusivity.
However, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced intentions to introduce stricter immigration requirements, which includes extending the waiting period for newcomers to achieve citizenship. Earlier this month, he referred to the focus on immigration over the last decade as an “unsuccessful experiment with open borders.”
In a recent policy paper, Starmer cited concerns about the negative impacts of mass immigration, revealing a significant shift in how immigration will be managed moving forward.
During the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, about 5,800 Americans renounced their US citizenship, a number that reflects the turmoil and political unrest in the United States. Interestingly, Alistair Banbridge, an accountant, noted that many of these individuals had already left the US and were simply pursuing a new chapter abroad.
Overall, the surge in expatriates applying for citizenship in the UK has now risen by 12% compared to the last quarter, continuing a trend that began in mid-2024.
