Don Nelson Accepts Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award
Former Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award before Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday. Living in Hawaii since his coaching days, he sent a heartfelt message to the franchise he once led.
During his press conference, Nelson mentioned that everyone in attendance was sporting the new Nike shoes endorsed by Luka Doncic. “I want everyone to know that they’re wearing Luka’s shoes, his new Nike shoes…and I’m wearing them in protest of the deal from Dallas,” he stated. He expressed his belief that trading Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers was a significant mistake for the Mavericks. “I think it was a tremendous mistake for the Dallas franchise to trade him out. I want everyone to know that,” he added.
Nelson is part of a larger group that feels General Manager Nico Harrison made a poor decision with the trade, which many consider one of the most surprising moves in recent sports history.
Mavericks fans were naturally upset, even staging a mock funeral outside the American Airlines Center following the trade announcement in February. Interestingly, Dallas may have received some luck recently by securing the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft lottery, which could lead them to Duke’s Cooper Flagg later this month.
Despite the turmoil, Mavericks supporters remain conflicted about Doncic’s move to the Lakers. While the Lakers didn’t progress far into the playoffs, Doncic put up similar numbers in Los Angeles as he did in Dallas, averaging 28.2 points per game there compared to 28.1 in Dallas.
At the heart of it, opinion varies on whether the trade was beneficial for the Mavericks. It’s hard to say who actually won the deal when you look at what’s happening now.
Don Nelson, a Hall of Fame coach with a legacy in the league, has 1,335 regular-season wins and 75 playoff victories to his name. He has coached several teams, including the Milwaukee Bucks, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and the Mavericks.
