Tom Felton Defends J.K. Rowling at Tony Awards
During the Tony Awards on Sunday night, actor Tom Felton, known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the “Harry Potter” series, spoke out in defense of J.K. Rowling. He was responding to questions about the backlash she has faced regarding her views on gender and biology.
Felton was interviewed on the red carpet by Variety, where he discussed his evolving role in the Broadway play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” which is set 19 years after the final book in the series. When asked whether Rowling’s controversial views had affected his work, he insisted that they had not. He characterized Rowling as a strong advocate in women’s spaces, despite being labeled as transphobic by some activists.
In his conversation, Felton emphasized his appreciation for how “Potter” has connected people around the globe. “I have been fortunate to travel the world, and I haven’t seen anything that connects people like ‘Potter’ does,” he stated. He expressed gratitude, recognizing Rowling’s role in creating this worldwide phenomenon.
Felton had previously praised Rowling during a 2022 interview, reflecting on how the “Potter” series brought together a diverse audience over the years. He seemed genuinely thankful for her contributions to the storytelling universe.
Rowling’s books have not only spawned a successful film franchise but are also being adapted into a new HBO series. Felton shared his excitement about returning to the character of Draco Malfoy, noting the thrill of performing live on stage. “We all thought the fandom would fade over time, but it clearly hasn’t,” he remarked. “This new version brings a fresh storyline that I think people will really love.”
