Sly Stone, the influential leader of Sly and the Family Stone, has died at the age of 82 after a prolonged battle with COPD, a severe lung condition. His family announced his passing, sharing the news with sadness.

In a heartfelt statement, they expressed, “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved dad, Sly. After enduring a long struggle with COPD and other health issues, Sly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his three children and close friends.” They continued, reflecting on his legacy: “We grieve his absence but find comfort in knowing that his incredible musical contributions will continue to inspire generations.”

Stone’s iconic tracks such as “Everyday People,” “Dance to the Music,” and “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” have left an unforgettable mark on the music world.

His family noted the importance of his recent work, sharing that he had completed a script about his life, which speaks volumes about his enduring creativity.

“Sly’s influence remains undeniable, and we thank everyone for their love and prayers during this challenging time.”

Born Sylvester Stewart in 1943 in Denton, Texas, Sly formed his band, initially named Sly and the Stoners, by 1966. The band later evolved into Sly and the Family Stone when he merged with Freddie Stone’s group. They came together to make music that would, you know, change everything, right?

Despite facing personal struggles, including substance abuse that affected his career in the 70s, Sly managed to find his footing again. He eventually focused on sobriety, achieving clarity in 2019 after doctors had warned him about the dangers of drugs.

In his more recent years, Sly spoke openly about his battle and recovery—reflecting on how important it was to his children and grandchildren. It’s remarkable how his life, filled with highs and lows, has had a lasting impact on music and culture, right?

Survived by his children—Silviet, Novena, and Sylvester Jr.—Sly Stone’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to resonate. He will be missed, but his music, and the stories it tells, will linger on.
