Riley Gaines Critiques Simone Biles Over Trans Athlete Remarks

Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines recently voiced her opinions regarding the ongoing debate about transgender athletes in women’s sports, specifically after a social media exchange with Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.

The conversation started when Gaines tweeted about a Minnesota high school softball team’s recent victory, which featured a transgender pitcher. Gaines remarked that the outcome was predictable, saying, “It’s expected when the star player is a boy.” This sparked further discussions online.

In response to these controversies, Biles expressed her disappointment, labeling Gaines as “really sick” and suggesting that she was “a painful loser.” Biles also hinted at the need to be kind and inclusive towards all athletes, but Gaines feels this perspective somewhat contradicts her own stance on fairness in sports.

Gaines’ Reaction to Biles’ Comments

On a recent show, Gaines revealed her astonishment upon reading Biles’ tweets, admitting that she had to double-check to make sure the account was genuine. “I couldn’t believe it,” she said. She felt that Biles had damaged her own legacy by making those remarks, which she viewed as detracting from the truth.

Despite not being offended by comments on Biles’ appearance, Gaines expressed sympathy towards younger fans of the gymnast, including her own sister. “People respect Simone,” she noted. “Her platform and influence matter, but I think she sold out younger fans with her statements.”

Gaines also disclosed that several of Biles’ teammates reached out to her supporting her views during the discussions, suggesting they believed Biles might be seeking attention ahead of an upcoming documentary on Netflix. “I think this backfired on her,” Gaines added.

Wider Implications on Women’s Sports

In wrapping up her thoughts, Gaines stated that the topic of transgender participation in women’s sports shouldn’t be as divisive a matter as it’s often portrayed. “If you look beyond the opinions of elites and celebrities, most everyday Americans are united on this issue,” she concluded, reflecting a belief that the dialogue could be more constructive if it focused on common perspectives rather than polarizing opinions.
