Wife Stands by Rex Heuermann in Murder Case
The wife of Rex Heuermann, the man accused in the “Gilgo Beach Murder” case, has come forward to declare her husband is still her “hero.” In a revealing interview featured in the upcoming Peacock documentary series, The Gilgo Beach Killer: House of Secrets, she expressed her belief that authorities have mistakenly targeted the wrong person.
She insists that her husband, whom she describes as “great,” is not the monster responsible for the gruesome murders and mutilations of seven sex workers on Long Island over the past three decades. “I know what a bad guy can do,” she stated emphatically. “You’ve got the wrong man.”
“I hope he’ll come back to me,” Ellerup continued, expressing confusion over the accusations. “They’re trying to tell me things that I just don’t understand. My husband was home with me.”
Despite DNA evidence linking Heuermann to the victims, including forensic findings that match the hair of both Asa Ellerup and the couple’s daughter, she maintains his innocence.
Ellerup recounted meeting the “tall, dark, and handsome” Heuermann at age 18 while he was working on Long Island. She shared some personal struggles, including being bullied as a teenager and her experience with a traumatic incident when she had to hide from classmates. Throughout her life challenges—including a double mastectomy—she asserts that Heuermann has always been supportive.
“He’s my hero,” she reiterated. “There were times he dropped everything to come and get me.”
She has also voiced skepticism about some evidence collected from their home by Suffolk County officials, such as explicit recordings, questioning their authenticity and whether they belonged to her husband.
Interestingly, while she expressed her beliefs in the documentary that “prostitution should be legal,” she firmly stated that Heuermann did not solicit prostitutes.
Although Ellerup filed for divorce shortly after Heuermann’s arrest, their daughter suggested that the filing was primarily to “protect assets.” Nevertheless, Ellerup claims to maintain regular communication with her husband.
“I was excited the last time I saw him,” she admitted, comparing it to how one might feel on a first date. “But it’s been months since our last visit, and I’m worried that our conversations might be monitored.”
She confided that it’s difficult for her to express her feelings openly, saying, “It’s going to hurt him to say I love him. I want to tell him that I love him, no matter what, but I don’t think he did these things.” She added, “People are asking why I didn’t know my husband could be a serial killer. But I was the one picking him up every day.”
Many are left wondering whether Heuermann could go out for an errand and commit such heinous acts in the meantime. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the murders of the seven women and is scheduled to appear in Suffolk County Criminal Court on June 17. He has been in custody since July 13, 2023.
