Democrats have criticized President Trump for allegedly abusing his power by deploying the National Guard to Los Angeles, but they’re navigating a tricky political landscape in the wake of immigration protests.
Officials in California and beyond have expressed their discontent with the federal government for sidelining Governor Gavin Newsom and suggest that Trump is intentionally escalating the situation.
Nonetheless, some Democrats recognize that pressing Trump could be necessary, especially as troubling images from the protests circulate, urging demonstrators to remain peaceful and not to provoke further chaos.
“I think Trump has manipulated this situation quite skillfully, balancing support for both violent protesters and law enforcement,” one expert noted.
According to Mavilio, Trump has effectively “weaponized” the immigration debate, portraying California as emblematic of the failings of Democratic governance.
Protests in California have surged in reaction to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, notably after ICE arrested 118 immigrants in Los Angeles last week.
In response to Newsom’s objections, Trump sent 2,000 National Guard troops to manage the protests and safeguard federal agents.
Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated, “If you can’t handle this on your own, the federal government needs to step in. Riots and looting are how things should be managed!” Trump emphasized a commitment to law and order.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security condemned the demonstrators, calling them “violent rioters,” and urged Democratic officials to tone down their rhetoric regarding ICE.
White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt depicted the situation as a “violent mob” attacking law enforcement that is merely conducting “basic deportation operations,” accusing California Democrats of failing to protect their communities.
California Democrats strongly disagreed. Newsom stated, “There wasn’t an issue until Trump intervened. This is an outright violation of national sovereignty and aggravates existing tensions while draining resources from where they’re genuinely required.”
The Democratic Governors Association labeled the president’s actions as “an incredible abuse of power,” arguing that federal interventions in California without consulting the state governor are both ineffective and hazardous.
Democrats are wary that this is a calculated maneuver by Trump to strengthen the Republican base in the state.
“Los Angeles: Don’t fall for Trump’s tactics. He thrives on confusion and has incited violence,” Newsom advised on social media.
Representative Sam Ricardo warned of the dangers posed by Trump’s “reckless deployment of federal forces” leading the nation towards chaos.
“Stay vocal, but keep it peaceful,” he advised Californians.
Bass echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the right of Angelenos to protest peacefully and admonishing them not to be ensnared by the administration’s provocations.
Just as tensions escalated, Trump addressed a reporter, claiming he would consider arresting Newsom based on a previous supportive comment towards the border czar.
Newsom reacted, saying, “We didn’t ever want to see this in America. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Democrat or Republican; this is a line we can’t cross. It’s a clear march towards authoritarianism.”
While most protests remained peaceful, some clashes with the police were reported, with the LAPD noting that some demonstrators began throwing objects.
The DHS urged local politicians to “curb the riots,” claiming they were siding with outsiders due to masked individuals with a Mexican flag on a vandalized vehicle.
These visuals could complicate the Democrats’ attempts to counter Trump’s narrative.
“The TV images are powerful,” Mavilio remarked.
However, political strategist Hank Shenkop lamented that trying to argue that Trump is exploiting the chaos for his gain won’t suffice.
Shenkop contended that Democrats could assign blame to the administration, which might paradoxically benefit Trump—“He can claim, ‘Look at the chaos they’ve created; I’m the only one who can restore order.’”
He believes Trump’s stance on immigration resonates well, suggesting there’s no real shift in public sentiment that could advantage the Democrats.
Representative Wesley Hunt defended Trump, claiming the Democrats “lit the fire” and then condemned the responders.
Democratic strategist Maria Cardona recognized her party’s tightrope as they balance supporting law enforcement while resisting Trump’s National Guard deployment. Yet, she believes they can manage this challenge and feels optimistic about their concerted pushback against the administration’s immigration stance amid unrest.
She added, “We know that by deploying the National Guard, Trump aims to worsen the situation. We need to remain strong advocates for fair immigration policy.”
This incident introduces a significant political challenge for Newsom, who is being viewed through the lens of his ambitions for the 2028 presidential election. Recently, he has tried to move toward the center but has often been seen as a leading figure in resistance against Trump.
He finds himself needing to defend his state and community while also demonstrating firmness against crime, a common vulnerability for Democrats.
Yet, Cardona saw this scenario as an opportunity for Newsom to showcase his leadership ahead of potential electoral contests.
Newsom announced plans to sue the federal government over the National Guard’s deployment, and after border czar Tom Homan hinted he might pursue arrests of Newsom or Bass for interference, the governor welcomed the confrontation.
“He stands firmly with California and for LAPD while also upholding our immigrant community’s interests,” Cardona stated. “When the focus shifts to 2028, this will certainly bolster his standing.
