Rosa DeLauro Confronts Pete Hegseth During Hearing

Confrontation Over Submarine Production Plans

On Tuesday, Rep. Rosa Delauro, a Democrat from Connecticut, vocally confronted Defense Secretary Pete Hegses during a discussion about the department’s submarine production plans. Delauro pressed Hegses to clarify the investment strategy aimed at boosting the construction of submarines in Connecticut. However, the Secretary of Defense appeared to struggle to articulate a clear response, leading to a somewhat tense atmosphere as lawmakers expressed their frustration over a lack of details regarding these plans.

“First of all, I would like to thank this committee for the flexibility,” Hegses began, but Delauro interrupted him before he could finish. “I hope this committee appreciates the funding provided,” she stated. Delauro then pointed out that Hegses’s opening remarks were misleading because significant investments had already been made. Her focus was direct: they wanted to understand what the future held for these investments and how they would ensure that production levels meet national security needs.

Hegses mentioned that the committee had already approved investments dedicated to shipbuilding and submarine production, but he noted that the prior administration had “washed” much of that investment, causing Delauro to pause when he referenced Biden’s presidency.

“I want to know your plans! I’ve dealt with previous administrations and have no qualms about calling them out,” Delauro exclaimed. “Can you summarize what your future plans look like in writing? We lack concrete information right now! You can talk percentages, but we need clarity.”

As the exchange continued, Delauro went on to speak without giving Hegses much time to respond.
