Conservative Host Challenges CNN Panelist Who Likens Illegal Immigration To Receiving a DUI

Discussion on Immigration in Media

Conservative radio host Ben Ferguson appeared on “CNN Newsnight” with former Univision Anchor Maria Elena Salinas, where they debated the comparison between illegal immigration and driving under the influence (DUI).

Salinas posited that entering the United States without the correct documentation isn’t technically a crime, arguing that it is akin to a misdemeanor like DUI. Ferguson countered that both actions—DUI and illegal border crossing—are breaches of law in the country.

“DUI is a misdemeanor, sure,” she said. But Ferguson, reflecting on the implications, added, “If a drunk driver were to crash into my family at high speed, calling it a misdemeanor doesn’t lessen the severity. It’s still against the law.”

Salinas did agree that re-entering the country after being deported constitutes a crime, but she emphasized that this does not equate to more severe crimes like murder or rape. She mentioned that President Donald Trump aimed to focus on deporting violent offenders, while his administration suggested they would prioritize those categories first.

According to U.S. law, individuals attempting to enter the country improperly or making false statements can be charged, potentially facing up to six months in prison for a first offense. Should a second attempt occur, penalties increase, potentially including two years in prison.

Meanwhile, overstaying a visa is deemed illegal in the U.S. but is typically regarded as a civil issue.

Instances of illegal immigrants committing serious crimes have raised concern. A notable case involved Laken Riley, a nursing student, who was killed by a Venezuelan national who had entered the U.S. illegally.

In another case, two Venezuelan individuals were implicated in the murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungary in Houston, Texas, where her body was discarded in a river.

In recent events, tensions flared in Los Angeles after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended over 100 illegal immigrants, some of whom had committed severe crimes, including murder and assault. The Department of Homeland Security referenced this group as the “worst of the worst” among illegal alien criminals.

A local journalist reported chaotic scenes as law enforcement surrounded protestors, leading to significant unrest with multiple arrests linked to the rising tensions over immigration policies.

Destruction of properties and local businesses during these protests highlighted the growing frustration, coupled with an atmosphere charged by political divisiveness.
