Officials preview DC security for Army's 250th anniversary parade

On Monday afternoon, the US Secret Service, FBI, and other federal security agencies shared information regarding security measures for the upcoming parade celebrating the Army’s 250th anniversary.

The event will feature over 150 armored vehicles and more than 6,000 soldiers coming to the capital. Soldiers will be accommodated in a nearby federal facility. It’s anticipated that around 200,000 people will take part in the long-expected military parade, which coincides with Flag Day and President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday.

This parade will be designated as a national special security event due to the presence of soldiers, weapons, and potential protests heading into Washington, D.C.

On the day of the parade, the Federal Aviation Administration will halt flight operations and advises anyone with travel plans to check in with their airlines for updates.

Pamela Smith, the police chief of the Washington Metropolitan Department, mentioned that there is no known credible threat to the parade.

Army’s 250th Anniversary Parade: When and Where

When: The one-hour parade starts at 6:30 PM.

Where: Northwest Constitution between 15th and 23rd Avenue.

Screening checkpoints for the 250th Birthday Parade will open at 2 PM on 14th Avenue between Independence and Constitutional Street, and C Street NW between 18th and 19th Avenue.

Before the parade, a ceremony will take place at Arlington National Cemetery. The festival at the National Mall begins at 11 AM local time, with the only screening checkpoint opening at 8 AM EDT near the National Mall on 7th Avenue NW, between Madison Drive and Jefferson Drive SW.

The Metropolitan Police Department has provided a list of prohibited items and additional road closures.

“Our history and legacy are incredibly rich, spanning from the Revolutionary War to Vietnam and the War on Terror,” said Col. Kamil Starcopal, spokesperson for the III Armored Corps in Texas. “We need to share the stories of our soldiers and their bravery.”

Military Parade Costs to Taxpayers

On Friday, Army spokesman Steve Warren stated that the Army’s birthday festivities would include fireworks displays, parades, and a one-day festival at the National Mall.

Military officials noted that the luxurious parade is a new addition to the celebration and could cost taxpayers up to $45 million.

During his first term, Trump suggested a parade after seeing one in France on Bastille Day in 2017, aiming for something even more impressive on Pennsylvania Avenue. However, that initial plan was canceled due to the estimated costs of $92 million and logistical concerns, including objections from city officials about potential damage from heavy military vehicles.

Protests Against the Parade

Activist groups nationwide are uniting against Trump’s expensive parade and his political agenda, labeling their movement “No King.” They plan to turn this birthday celebration into a focal point for protest, encouraging people to come together in their communities to criticize political corruption.

Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Civics, stated that various organizations are coming together to reject corrupt and authoritarian politics in the US.

“With Flag Day upon us, we must reflect on what America should stand for and our fundamental values,” she added.

Demonstrations are scheduled across several cities, including Phoenix, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Charlotte, North Carolina.
