Injury Update: WNBA’s Dallas Wings
Another season-ending injury has impacted the WNBA. The Dallas Wings announced Tuesday that Guard Ty Harris, after weeks spent recovering from a knee injury, will undergo a procedure but is set to continue competing this year.
Details about Harris’s procedure weren’t specified, though it’s known she had been sidelined due to an issue with her left leg. Harris played in five games after being traded from Connecticut to Phoenix and then from Phoenix to Dallas earlier this season. She was initially drafted by Dallas in 2020 after her time at South Carolina, playing three seasons with the Wings before her trade to Connecticut.
This news follows closely on the heels of Courtney VanderSloot’s season-ending ACL injury. Harris marks the fourth WNBA player to face a knee-related season-ending issue since training camp commenced. Other players, Georgia Amoore and Katie Lou Samuelson, also suffered ACL injuries during training camp.
Lucas Seehafer, a PhD specializing in WNBA epidemiology, has reported a troubling total of 77 injuries so far in the 2025 season, including 20 knee injuries alone. His data indicates that players with knee injuries have been missing an average of 15.2 games per injury. The next common injuries reported this season include general leg injuries (14) and ankle injuries (11).
The Wings have struggled this season, starting with a disappointing 1-9 record in their first ten games. Paige Bueckers has missed the last four games due to concussion and illness, though coach Chris Cochrans confirmed she is expected to play in Wednesday’s game. Currently, the team is sitting at the bottom of the standings in 13th place.
Harris’s injury leaves the Wings without another experienced point guard, especially since Bueckers is still considered a rookie. Arike Ogunbowale’s season has had a rough start, but she is gradually returning to her scoring average, currently sitting at 19.1 points per game—just under her career average of 20.4. The impact of Bueckers’s return on Ogunbowale’s performance will be interesting to observe.
Questions linger about the Wings’ future this season. Fans and analysts speculate whether they might blow up the roster mid-season or shift focus to the next year’s draft to compensate for losses. With several free agents leaving this offseason, discussions about trading some older players for younger talent already secured for the next season are heating up. Additionally, there are concerns regarding the coaching staff’s future, as both fans and analysts wonder if changes might occur during the season.
