Response to Mayor Bass’ Rhetoric
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has drawn sharp criticism from White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. He characterized her remarks as “a definition of rebellion,” particularly in light of Democratic accusations directed at the Trump administration concerning unrest in the city.
Mayor Bass emphasized the need to quell what she termed “the attack,” asserting that the actions of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), particularly in pursuing undocumented individuals, should not take place in urban areas. “It’s not guaranteed that anything good comes from it. All it does is lead to chaos,” she remarked, reflecting on a recent incident where she noted that the city was calm on Thursday but spiraled into turmoil by Friday due to federal involvement.
Miller’s response was pointed. He stated, “The threat posed by Mayor Bass is evident.” He interpreted her comments as suggesting that violence against ICE would persist unless federal law enforcement ceased its operations in Los Angeles. “This is essentially rebellion,” he asserted.
He further criticized the leadership in L.A. and California for attempting to unilaterally dictate immigration policy while allegedly allowing mob violence against federal agents. Miller concluded that Los Angeles and California “need national laws implemented consistently.”
In a video shared by Miller, Bass does not acknowledge that federal law enforcement is facing backlash. The reality diverges from the narrative presented by some on the left. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), numerous illegal immigrants have been apprehended in Los Angeles, with serious criminal records involving child abuse, weapon offenses, sexual assault, and other violent crimes.
