Bloomberg Backs Cuomo’s Mayoral Bid
Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has put aside any past tensions with ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo, voicing his support for Cuomo’s 2025 mayoral aspirations on Tuesday afternoon.
In a statement, Bloomberg, who served three terms as mayor and identifies as an independent Republican-turned-Democrat, emphasized Cuomo’s experience. “When considering the candidates for mayor, there’s one who stands out for his management skills and government expertise: Andrew Cuomo,” he asserted.
It’s interesting to note that Bloomberg and Cuomo had a strained relationship during their overlapping tenures in office. A New York Times article from 2011 highlighted some of this friction.
Recently, Bloomberg expressed his concern about the city’s future, mentioning the struggles since he left office, particularly post-pandemic. He claimed that Cuomo is the candidate who could broaden the mayoral race and is well-regarded for his leadership abilities.
This endorsement comes amid the backdrop of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a prominent figure in the New York Democratic scene, backing Zoran Mamdani, a socialist candidate. Surprisingly, Mamdani is now close in polling to Cuomo, with just a one-point deficit, according to recent opinion surveys.
The primary election for New York City’s mayor will take place on June 24th.
