NYPD Prepares for Escalating Protests

On Wednesday, Police Commissioner Jessica Tish announced that the NYPD would assume a pivotal role in managing protests, which she feels are spiraling out of control in New York City, particularly in the wake of President Trump’s federal response to the riots in Los Angeles.

Tish noted that the department is keeping a close watch on violence levels on the West Coast but emphasized that New York’s officers are already gearing up to confront agitation locally.

“This weekend, I was on the phone with our federal partners in New York City, including the head of the FBI and officials from federal protective services and homeland security,” Tish remarked during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I made it clear: the New York City Police Department is well-versed in handling protests. Our officers train extensively, and I believe they’re among the best in the world. It’s our duty to ensure safety and maintain order in our streets, and we will uphold that duty,” she stated.

Tish’s comments stemmed from the situation in Los Angeles, where Trump dispatched 4,000 national security guards and 700 Marines in response to violent protests sparked by his deportation policies.

Protests against ICE began to spread across New York, with around 2,500 demonstrators appearing in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday night.

The NYPD was actively monitoring the situation at Foley Square during the demonstrations.

More than 80 individuals were arrested following a confrontation with police, highlighting tensions that escalated during the protests.

“We had a group of around 200 people, and things became a bit chaotic. The New York City Police Department doesn’t allow that kind of disorder,” Tish explained.

As tensions rose, arrests were made after demonstrators began clashing with officers and throwing objects at them.

“Our police officers performed admirably. They ensured everyone had the right to protest peacefully, but when things get out of control, it’s our duty to step in and make arrests,” she said. “And that’s precisely what they did—with speed and efficiency.”
