Hegseth Backs Troop Deployment Amid LA Protests
On Tuesday and Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth spoke before Congress, supporting President Donald Trump’s choice to send troops to Los Angeles in light of escalating anti-ICE protests.
The riots had been ongoing for nearly a week, prompting Trump to deploy Marines and National Guard units to the area. Protesters were seen throwing rocks and concrete at law enforcement while also setting fires and displaying foreign flags during their demonstrations against ICE activities in LA.
In contrast, Democrats expressed significant frustration over the military deployment, insisting their protests were peaceful. Hegseth, however, stood firm against the criticism. “The mission in Los Angeles is not about lethality,” he emphasized during a hearing, arguing it’s really about ensuring law enforcement can operate without being assaulted by mobs.
“All American citizens deserve to be in a safe community,” he added, underscoring the need for order.
Hegseth expressed pride in the National Guard and Marines for their role in protecting ICE agents, insisting they would remain deployed to ensure safety. He responded to claims that the deployment was an excessive show of force by reiterating that law enforcement is simply doing its job.
“ICE agents must be able to perform their duties, and currently, they are under attack just for doing their jobs. This involves deporting illegal criminals, something that should not take place peacefully in any city, including Minneapolis or Los Angeles,” he stated, reinforcing Trump’s stance on law and order.
The pushback from Democrats continued, but Hegseth pointed out that ICE operates under federal law and deserves to do its work effectively. “In Los Angeles, ICE, as a federal law enforcement agency, has the right to operate safely in its jurisdiction, especially given the millions of undocumented individuals who have crossed the border in recent years,” he argued.
