Zoe Saldaña Talks About Her Oscar

In a recent conversation with People Magazine, Zoe Saldaña, the Academy Award-winning actress, revealed that her Oscar uses the pronouns “them/them.” She mentioned that it’s a reflection of her perspective, saying, “We have it in my office and my Oscar is gender fluid.”

The 46-year-old actress, known for her role in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” garnered her first Oscar this year for best supporting actress in the musical drama “Emilia Perez.” The film tackles the life of a Mexican cartel leader who turns to gender transition as a means to escape his troubled past.

Interestingly, “Emilia Perez” features Cara Sofia Gascon as the first openly transgender Oscar nominee for best actress, although Gascon did not win the award.

Saldaña isn’t the only performer to embrace a non-binary interpretation of her award. In a 2023 interview on the “Today” show, Jamie Lee Curtis referred to her Oscar as “them/them” in support of her transgender daughter, Ruby. “Here we are! In support of my daughter Ruby, I’m the one who’s become them/them,” she expressed while showcasing her statue.

Curtis has reiterated her views on the gender of her award, stating in a 2024 chat that her Oscar is indeed “gendered.” It’s a fascinating topic, one that highlights changing perspectives on identity and recognition in Hollywood.
