Dwayne Johnson Discusses Ongoing Digestive Issues
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson recently shared insights about his ongoing digestive health struggles.
In a conversation with Ali Emmanuel, his long-time business partner and former agent, Johnson, 53, reflected on his health challenges, particularly his intestinal problems that have persisted over the years.
Emmanuel, who is now the CEO of Endeavor, WWE’s parent company, noted his own experience with Dr. Mark Hyman, prompting a virtual meeting between Johnson and the doctor.
During their discussion, Johnson admitted he was unfamiliar with functional medicine, a practice that looks deeply into the root causes of health issues rather than just treating symptoms. “He said, ‘I’m not going to treat your symptoms. I’m going to go deeper than that and treat the root cause of what’s going on,'” Johnson recalled. “And then I said, ‘I love it.’ ”
The journey towards treatment is set to begin early in 2024, coinciding with Johnson’s preparations for a significant role at WrestleMania 40. Hyman indicated that extensive testing, like blood panels and stool tests, would help identify and tackle the issues affecting Johnson.
This past year has been particularly demanding for Johnson with various commitments, including wrestling, the release of “Red One,” and the upcoming “Moana 2” alongside work on “The Smashing Machine.”
As he prepared for a grueling nine-month schedule starting early 2024, Johnson expressed concerns about managing his gut health. “I was thinking, ‘Holy s-t, how do I get over this with my gut problems? I’m not digesting it properly,'” he said.
Fortunately, Hyman was able to assist, discovering that Johnson’s issues were likely linked to multiple rounds of antibiotics that disrupted his gut bacteria. Johnson had lost Akkermansia, a type of bacteria crucial for maintaining the intestinal barrier and preventing inflammation and leaky gut.
“We basically rehabilitated your gut. It helped us rebuild probiotics and plant compounds,” Hyman explained. “And we’ve created this amazing gut health shake with over 10 personalized ingredients for you.”
Although Johnson hasn’t wrestled in WWE since, he played a key role in John Cena’s character transformation earlier this year.
