Apple promotes inclusivity but shows that Christianity is excluded.

Some argue that Christianity remains widespread.

A recent article highlighted that various public figures, including high-ranking Democrats, are donning cross pendant necklaces as a form of expression against societal issues. This practice is being observed on the red carpet, in social media, and even at the White House.

However, it seems that even with celebrities wearing these symbols, mainstream television producers still overlook the representation and respect that the world’s largest religious groups deserve.

The Apple TV+ series “Your Friends and Neighbors” has been criticized for featuring a character from the Catholic Church who disrespects the Eucharist, believing it to be the body of Christ. Such characterizations contribute to a trend of intolerance towards Catholicism, which is surprising given Apple’s stated values of diversity and inclusion.

Many feel that Apple should at least apologize to its viewers. Even better, they ought to pull the episode, aligning their actions with their acceptance policies.

No matter one’s faith, it’s clear that the scene in question seems largely irrelevant to the narrative, appearing more like a malicious jab at Catholicism. In the scene, two main characters trespass into a Catholic Church, steal a sacred host, consume it as a snack, and engage in indecent acts. This is hardly a respectful portrayal.

Moreover, while the show depicts the Eucharist inappropriately, Catholics believe it represents the true body, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ. The tradition of communion originates from Christ himself, established on his final night. Receiving communion at Mass is regarded as the “Source and Summit of Christian life.”

Furthermore, Apple’s insensitivity is especially noticeable during a time of hope within the Catholic community, following the election of Pope Leo XIV.

It seems contradictory for Apple to abandon its own mission statement that emphasizes dignity and respect. The company claims that its values “foster a collaborative culture” that values diverse experiences and backgrounds. Yet, by promoting content that undermines the Catholic faith, they violate this principle and contradict CEO Tim Cook’s advocacy for religious freedom.

This pattern of derogation towards Catholicism is not new. Since 2020, reports indicate that over 500 incidents involving physical attacks and vandalism against Catholic churches have been documented, including arson and graffiti. In an incident just last year, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer found herself apologizing after a video mimicking a priest giving communion sparked outrage among Catholics.

Now, many are urging Apple to reconsider the inclusion of disrespectful content in “Your Friends and Neighbors” and return to a stance that fosters acceptance for diverse beliefs, including those of Catholics.

It’s disappointing that viewers who seek entertainment and enlightenment should have to endure such derogatory portrayals. I think everyone deserves better.
