Starbucks Embraces Protein Trends

Starbucks is getting in on the growing trend of protein-packed foods and beverages. If you’ve been browsing online lately, you’ve likely noticed a surge in popularity around high-protein options.

To tap into this, Starbucks is piloting a new way to add 15 grams of protein to nearly any drink. They’re testing cold protein foam at five different locations across the US as part of a wellness initiative announced by CEO Brian Nicole during a recent leadership event in Las Vegas.

“This is going to be a rocket,” Nicole stated at the event. “It’s trending. It’s tasty.”

Nicole explained to Axios that the innovation is aimed at a diverse range of customers, including younger men in their twenties, women in their fifties, and individuals on GLP-1 medication.

He shared an observation about customers who often bring their own protein powders to the store, mixing them into their drinks, which made him realize that Starbucks could enhance this experience for them.

Currently, the company is aiming to energize the trend with Gen Z, who are actively participating in the challenge of achieving “100 grams of protein every day.” TikTok has played a significant role in promoting this challenge.

As the use of GLP-1 medications increases, research highlights that a high-protein diet is crucial for preserving muscle during appetite-suppressing treatments.

Starbucks hopes that the protein powder can be integrated into any flavor of cold foam. The current test features a banana cold foam, as reported by Foodsid, and they are starting their trials with the Ice Cafe Latte.

Although it’s still in the testing phase, Nicole expressed optimism that a nationwide rollout could happen sooner rather than later. “It’s not one of those years gone by; it’s just a few months away,” he mentioned.
