PayPal Plans New Stablecoin on Stellar Network

PayPal has announced its intention to seek regulatory approval from the New York State Department of Financial Services for the launch of PYUSD, a USD stablecoin designed to operate on the Stellar Network.

The goal of this initiative is to make use of the network’s characteristics like fast and low-cost payments to enhance both payments and financial services, according to the company’s statement.

Stellar is recognized for its speed and low transaction fees, which PYUSD can leverage as an alternative to platforms like Ethereum and Solana.

The integration is expected to broaden the utility of PYUSD across various financial operations, especially in areas like cross-border payments and microfinance.

Users of PYUSD will benefit from Stellar’s wide array of entry and exit points, making everyday financial transactions more straightforward.

This could include payment solutions for remittances and merchant services.

Additionally, Stellar’s PYUSD may introduce new liquidity and funding opportunities via payment funds, often referred to as “Payfi”.

This feature could facilitate instant payments that firms can employ for operational needs like paying suppliers and managing inventory.

“We’re excited to share this development,” said May Zabane, who is the vice president of Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Digital Currency Groups. “Considering digital currency’s potential to deliver real-world value, especially in cross-border payments, we see substantial opportunities here.”

Denelle Dixon, CEO of the Stellar Development Foundation, also expressed optimism, stating, “With PYUSD reaching more than 170 countries, we’re turning it into a practical financial tool accessible to millions of users and merchants.”

This announcement follows a recent partnership between PayPal and MasterCard, aimed at improving user payment options at checkout.
