WNBA Ratings Plummet Without Caitlin Clark
Since Caitlin Clark was sidelined with a left quad injury, WNBA ratings have taken a considerable hit, raising concerns about the league’s dependency on its star player. This isn’t merely a coincidence; the WNBA had seen significant growth last year, particularly when Indiana Fever’s Kate Rinklerk transitioned from college basketball to the pros, essentially revitalizing interest in the league.
Clark hasn’t played since May 24th and has missed five games, making it clear she won’t return until fully healed. The data from recent viewership numbers underscores the seriousness of her absence.
The figures are striking: the Fever’s games have seen a 53% drop in nationwide viewership. With Clark on the court, the average audience was 1,810,000; without her, it plummeted to 847,000.
The Fever, struggling in her absence, have dropped to a 4-5 record. The expectations were high for a recent game against the Chicago Sky. Chicago hoped to capitalize on the excitement around Rinklerk and the Fever, moving venues from a smaller arena to the larger United Center to attract a big crowd. However, when game day arrived and Clark couldn’t play, tickets had to be sold for as low as $3 to avoid the embarrassment of a nearly empty arena.
Last year highlighted how crucial Clark is for maintaining viewership in women’s basketball. While she drew massive ratings during the NCAA Final 4 in 2023, interest waned significantly after she left college basketball, suggesting that the Final 4 lost its luster without her presence.
The overall sentiment is becoming increasingly apparent: without Caitlin Clark, women’s basketball seems to struggle to maintain its place in the sports landscape.
