Response to Immigration Issues from Demi Lovato

Singer Demi Lovato recently addressed the illegal immigrant situation amid ongoing riots in Los Angeles, expressing solidarity with those who are “living in fear.” In a series of Instagram stories on Wednesday, Lovato urged others to reflect on their privilege of being born in the United States before forming judgments about individuals who have entered the country unlawfully.

“It’s truly heartbreaking to see the chaos in Los Angeles and across the nation,” she stated. “Immigration is a vital part of our community and is interwoven into the fabric of our country. I feel somewhat helpless, but I stand with those who are in fear and hope these resources offer some assistance.”

Lovato also shared information about the Immigrant Defenders Law Center to support funds for detained immigrants.

“We must remember that our biggest blessing is the circumstances of our birth—when and where we were born. Our citizenship is, in many ways, just luck or perhaps the result of our parents’ sacrifices. Yet, it’s a privilege we cannot take for granted,” she continued in another Instagram post. “We’re fortunate, yet we often don’t consider that before judging those who act out of desperation.”

This announcement follows closely after Katy Perry’s remarks about illegal immigrants being “hunted like criminals in their ancestral homes,” suggesting that the lands in California, including Los Angeles, historically belong to them.

Los Angeles has a rich history shaped by three flags: Spain, Mexico, and the United States. The area has experienced shifting borders and power over time, but brown and indigenous people have always remained. Perry stated, “I have planted roots, built a life, and raised my family here.”

“It’s not just infuriating, it’s a profound injustice. How can a city built on Mexican labor and culture turn around to criminalize those who helped shape it?” another post reflected.
