CENTCOM removes ISIS leader in Syria with airstrike aimed at outside activities

Airstrike Targets ISIS Official in Syria

On Tuesday, a US Central Command (CENTCOM) airstrike in northern Syria resulted in the death of an ISIS official, identified as Rakhim Boev. CENTCOM reported the operation, stating that Boev was involved in orchestrating threats against US citizens and allies.

This action highlights CENTCOM’s ongoing efforts to thwart terrorist operations in the region. They noted that this strike was a collaborative effort with local partners aimed at disrupting terrorist activities targeting the US military.

Interestingly, last month, President Donald Trump announced an unexpected shift in US policy towards Syria, suggesting the normalization of relations by lifting long-standing sanctions. Just a few months prior, he had characterized Syria as “not our friend” and pushed for the US to distance itself from the turmoil there.

The collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, following advancements by the former al-Qaeda affiliate known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), signified not just a shift in political control but also dealt a significant blow to Iran’s influence in the region.

Trump advocated that easing sanctions could help stabilize Syria and encouraged the EU to follow suit, aiming to foster diplomatic relations between Syria and Israel. Meanwhile, the Syrian President, Ahmed Arshara, also leads the HTS, which remains unclassified as a terrorist entity by the US and the UN. Still, formal diplomatic moves towards Israel are yet to be confirmed.

Furthermore, Trump emphasized the new Syrian government’s responsibility to manage the threats posed by rising Islamic extremist groups.

The ongoing conflict in Syria presents a complex landscape, with multiple factions, loyalties, and terrorist organizations like ISIS complicating the situation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio even warned that Syria might face a severe civil war in the near future, highlighting the vulnerabilities of the transitional government.
