Oklahoma Man Planned Attack on Football Stadium
An individual from Oklahoma, Landon Kyle Swinford, expressed his allegiance to the Islamic State and aimed to execute a terrorist attack on the Oklahoma Sooners football stadium in 2023, according to court documents.
Swinford, along with his contacts, identified security weaknesses at the stadium and began surveying the area. He mentioned, “We looked at the barricades and security and thought the stadium could be a potential target for the attack.”
From May to October 2023, Swinford maintained communication with undercover agents. He even shared his intentions to travel to Tunisia to join forces with the Islamic State.
Interestingly, Swinford remarked that he would have carried out the attack “sadly” if he had the means to do so. His fascination with causing chaos extended to New Orleans, where he allegedly considered striking at a Voodoo temple during Mardi Gras.
Currently, Swinford faces charges related to possessing child pornography and making interstate threats, with a verdict pending on these issues.
Recent court documents indicate that he had informed FBI officials about intentions to attack local synagogues and inspire support for ISIS.
The Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, home to the Sooners since 1923, has undergone renovations ahead of the 2019 season and has a seating capacity of over 80,000, attracting more than 88,000 spectators at its peak in 2017.
