USMNT’s Cobi Jones Optimistic About World Cup Prospects

Cobi Jones, a legendary figure in U.S. soccer, has expressed a strong belief that the current U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) can achieve significant success in the upcoming World Cup. At 54 years old, Jones reflected on the team’s past performances, suggesting that their history could guide their future potential.

He recollected the surprising run of the 2002 team, which reached the quarter-finals—its best performance in modern World Cup history. “They can go all the way, and I know people laugh at it, but when I see what we did in 2002, no one expected us to go that far,” he said.

Jones is optimistic that the upcoming year will be vital for team cohesion. “I think the most crucial aspect is that we remain united as a team. The outcome isn’t my main concern right now. We have a whole year ahead of us,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Jones acknowledged the need for coaching adjustments, emphasizing that Coach Pochettino has time to implement the necessary changes for team improvement. His excitement extends beyond just the matches, as he mentioned the anticipation of various events surrounding the tournament. “I’m looking forward not just to the games but to all the activities and parties. There will be a lot going on,” he said.

Jones, who played for the USMNT from 1992 to 2004 and scored 15 goals, is eager for the World Cup festivities that will highlight diverse cultures coming together. “It’s about the people—bars, restaurants, outdoor stadiums. It’s a celebration of community and culture,” he remarked.
